Platform Migrations Don’t Create Growth — Smart Execution Does
Steven explains that switching from WooCommerce to Shopify didn’t magically improve conversion rates. He stresses that growth comes from what you do with a platform, not the platform itself. Many businesses expect an automatic uplift, but that’s a myth. The truth is that poor sites improve when rebuilt well, not because of the tech stack. This message is essential for any brand considering a migration, and Steven’s real-world experience makes it even more compelling.
Rapid Scaling Still Feels Chaotic — Even at $68 Million
Despite 10x growth, Steven says the business still feels like a startup facing new fires every day. Growth doesn’t bring calm; it brings different and often bigger problems. What changes is the team’s ability to handle them with more experience and better tools. This honesty is rare and refreshing in a landscape full of “scaled overnight” stories. It’s an important reminder that chaos is normal and survivable for growing eCommerce brands.
Data Beats Opinions — Test Everything, Trust Nothing
Steven has been in online marketing since 1992, and his lesson is clear: opinions don’t matter unless they’re tested. He challenges the idea of “best practices,” saying they often fail when applied blindly. Instead, he pushes for quick, cheap experimentation to validate ideas before investing heavily. This mindset helps avoid costly mistakes, especially in fast-moving eCommerce teams. Anyone responsible for CRO, marketing, or tech will want to hear his take.
Wholesale Is Where Long-Term Scale Happens
Direct-to-consumer growth is exciting, but Steven shows that wholesale is where true volume sits for many brands. A single distributor controlling thousands of retail doors can move more units than months of online campaigns. These relationships bring stability and scale that DTC often can’t match. But each region has unique rules, expectations, and privacy laws that brands must navigate. His global perspective helps founders understand how to build a balanced growth strategy.
Your Product Must Truly Improve Lives — That’s What Builds a Brand
Steven shares countless stories of customers, athletes, and coaches whose lives changed because of Xero Shoes. He believes a brand only deserves to exist if it brings real value to people’s wellbeing. This philosophy has guided every major decision at Xero Shoes, including product development and marketing. It proves that authenticity isn’t a marketing tactic; it’s a growth engine. Hearing how this belief shaped their journey makes the full episode incredibly inspiring.
eCommerce Book Top Tip
- Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets (Incerto) by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
- Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert
eCommerce Traffic Top Tip
- Word of mouth is their biggest traffic driver. Nearly half of all orders come from existing customers, and many of the rest come from people those customers introduced to the brand.
Tool Top Tip
- Steven’s “tool” top tip is actually an anti-tool: he avoids Slack to reduce distractions — and instead uses a blackjack training app that’s helped him think differently about data, risk, and decision-making.
Carbon Top Tip
- Reduce landfill waste by making durable minimalist shoes that last longer, keep materials out of landfills, and support resale/second-life programs. And stay vigilant against greenwashing by rigorously testing supplier claims.
