Start with the Business Problem—Then See if AI Can Help

Ian stresses the importance of not chasing shiny tech just because it’s new. Instead, he urges brands to focus on real problems first. Only then should you ask, “Can AI help solve this?” This ensures you spend time and budget on what actually matters. It’s a grounded, strategic approach every team should adopt—especially when AI hype is everywhere.

eCommerce Is Not Just a Sales Channel—It Drives In-Store Intent Too

Many brands treat online and offline channels separately. But Ian shows how eCommerce deeply influences showroom visits and purchase decisions. Customers start their journey online, then may visit a store to finalize the purchase. That means your website isn’t just for transactions—it’s a key part of driving footfall. Think omnichannel from day one if you want to win.

Prioritize Projects Based on Value, Not Noise

With endless ideas and tools, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Ian and his team focus on projects that deliver the highest business value first. They use data, analytics, and sometimes external agencies to size up opportunities. Quick wins are great, but long-term gains matter more. This lesson is gold for eCommerce teams trying to stay focused and make real progress.

Invest in the Tech Stack—but Own the Experience

At Oak Furnitureland, Ian works closely with IT, SEO, and marketing teams. His eCommerce team doesn’t build everything, but they own the user experience and conversion rate optimization. That means you don’t need to control every part of your tech—but you do need to lead the customer journey. Cross-team collaboration is key. This structure is a smart model for growing brands.

Let Teams Explore AI—but Set Guardrails

Ian encourages his team to play with AI tools, but within a secure environment. He warns that if you’re not paying for the tool, you—and your data—are the product. That means brands must consider IP protection and use paid platforms for serious work. This is a timely reminder for teams eager to explore AI. You can move fast, but you still need to stay safe.

eCommerce Book Top Tip

eCommerce Traffic Top Tip

  • Double down on content marketing. Ian says brands that create rich, helpful content like guides, FAQs, and how-tos will win more traffic as AI engines start pulling from trusted sources.

Tool Top Tip

  • Use make.com to supercharge your automations. Ian swears by this powerful low-code tool for everything from syncing 3PLs with Shopify to fraud alerts and competitor tracking. Plus, AI tools like ChatGPT can help you troubleshoot setups. If you’re serious about automating workflows, Ian says this is a must-try.

Carbon Top Tip

  • Design products that last. Ian believes the most impactful way to reduce your eCommerce carbon footprint is to sell high-quality items that stand the test of time. At Oak Furnitureland, durability is built into the brand, with furniture designed to last for years—not end up in landfill after a few uses.
