How CULT MIA Scaled 5X by Building a Global Luxury Fashion Marketplace (episode 604)
Holly Daniels is the Head of eCommerce at CULT MIA & a Drapers 30 Under 30 Alumni. CULT MIA is an independent luxury fashion marketplace, showcasing new designers and unique collections, many of which are exclusive on their Shopify website. Founded in 2019 they won Draper’s Best Independent Retailer in 2022 AND 2023 and last year were named in the UK Fast Growth Index – not surprising since in the last couple of years they’ve scaled sales 5 times.
In this episode, Holly lifts the lid on how CULT MIA scaled 5X while navigating global logistics, international expansion, and the unique challenges of running a luxury fashion marketplace. Expect practical insights on data-driven growth, entering new markets, creating exceptional customer experiences, and using AI where it delivers real business impact.

Follow the Data, Not Your Assumptions
One of the biggest growth opportunities for Cult Mia came from questioning what the data was actually saying. The team initially believed many of their customers were based in the UK. A deeper look revealed that many of those shoppers were actually from the Middle East and were simply traveling through Europe. That insight completely changed their marketing strategy and opened up a major growth market. It’s a powerful reminder that your next growth opportunity may already be hiding in your customer data.
Timing Can Be More Important Than Targeting
When Cult Mia first tried advertising in the Middle East, the results were disappointing. The audience, creative, and products seemed right, but the campaigns still struggled. After further research, they discovered they were marketing during a period when many target customers were traveling abroad. By relaunching campaigns at a more relevant time of year, performance improved dramatically. The lesson is simple: even great marketing can fail if you reach customers at the wrong moment.
Great Customer Experience Doesn’t End at Checkout
Nearly half of Cult Mia’s brands operate on a made-to-order model, with delivery times ranging from days to weeks. Rather than treating this as a disadvantage, the team focuses heavily on communication after the sale. Customers receive updates throughout the production and shipping process, which helps build excitement and trust. This approach reduces anxiety and improves satisfaction despite longer wait times. For eCommerce brands, post-purchase communication can be just as important as conversion optimization.
Ask Experts Before Problems Become Expensive
As Cult Mia expanded internationally, they encountered increasingly complex challenges around customs, tariffs, taxes, and compliance. Instead of trying to solve everything internally, the team brought in specialists who had experience with global marketplaces. This helped them avoid costly mistakes and scale much faster. Holly repeatedly stresses the importance of seeking expert advice rather than assuming you can figure everything out yourself. For growing eCommerce businesses, the right expert can save both time and money.
Use AI to Solve Real Problems, Not to Follow Trends
Holly’s approach to AI is refreshingly practical. Rather than using AI because it’s fashionable, her team focuses on areas where it can save meaningful time or improve business performance. They use it to review shipping and tax invoices, identify discrepancies, and help customers discover products within a catalog of thousands of items. Every AI project is evaluated based on effort versus impact. It’s a useful framework for any eCommerce business trying to cut through the hype and find genuine value from AI.
